Queen Crowned: Sarah Hudson to rule over Vigo County Fair

‘It is such a rush:’ Hudson excited about achievement

TERRE HAUTE — The 2013 Miss Vigo County Fair Queen crown was bestowed on Sarah Hudson on Friday night at Tilson Auditorium.

Hudson, 19, a Saint Mary-of-the-Woods student, will represent Vigo County at the upcoming Indiana State Fair. She succeeds 2012 queen Kayla Lindsay.

“It is such a rush and I am very excited to be the new queen,” Hudson said shortly after being crowned.

First runner-up was Jacy McClain, 18, and second runner-up was Klair Wiram, 18.

“It is an honor, I never thought I’d get this,” McClain said.

“This feels great and I couldn’t have asked for more,” Wiram added.

Both runners-up said they plan on participating next year as well.

Miss congeniality — an award voted on by the contestants on who is the friendliest — and the People’s Choice Award — an award voted on by the attendees — were both given to Cami Lee, 17.

Joy Jackson, the pageant director said that 70 percent of the judging was completed on Thursday when the contestants showed off their professional attire and conducted interviews in front of three judges. Friday’s session was to show the crowd the professional attire, conduct interviews and to demonstrate their evening wear.

After the 3 finalists were announced they each answered the same interview question. The other finalists were put in a room where they couldn’t hear the question before appearing on stage.

The queen and the two runners-up play a vital role in the upcoming Vigo County Fair which runs July 7-13, she added.

“I am most looking forward to the animal showing and tractor pull,” Hudson said while smiling. “Anything that involves getting dirty.”

The three judges — Nikki Carpenter, Rebecca Scott and Shelley Edmondson — agreed that the queen should be an active role model.

“We are looking for a leader who stands out,” Edmondson said prior to the pageant. “She needs to represent our county well.”

And Hudson hopes to do just that at the upcoming State Fair.

“I hope I do well and improve as much as I can,” she said.

All three women received an assortment of prizes from different businesses in the Vigo County. The queen received gifts such as, a $50 Boot City gift card, $100 gift certificate from Melanie’s Bridal Boutique and a queen tote bag from logo connections.

Meanwhile, Kisses for Chloe — a fundraiser for Chloe Hurst, 12 — who was diagnosed with a form of bone cancer, raised $554.13 to go toward her hospital bills. The fundraiser took place prior to the pageant where attendees would put money in a jar for the contestant they wanted to win.

Now with the pageant behind her, things don’t get easy for the new queen. Hudson will have a busy schedule, Jackson said, with training for the Indiana State Fair will begin soon.

“This has definitely been a lot of hard work and there is plenty more to come,” Hudson said.
