Employees, football fans of all stripes keep pace with game

TERRE HAUTE — Super Bowl Sunday and food are connected much like Thanksgiving and turkey.

In a blog entry on the website of Jamie Oliver (the famous chef), blogger Jim Tanfield wrote about this connection.

“Not only is it [Super Bowl] the second-most watched sports event in the world, it’s also the day that Americans buy and eat the most food (excluding Thanksgiving),” the blog entry said.

If people chose to stay at home and watch the game on their TV’s, they usually either shop and prepare food or just order food for delivery.

A manager at Buffalo Wild Wings, on U.S. 41, said the restaurant has been busy with take out all day. At game time, food and drinks flowed as customers filled the place to watch the game.

“What you eat and drink on the day is clearly an important part of the Super Bowl. I mean let’s face it, there are a lot of breaks in the average American football game, and people need to be distracted,” the blog continued.

And many people choose pizza for their Super Bowl food.

Hours before and all through game time, pizza houses in Terre Haute were busy preparing, delivering and just keeping the product rolling for their Super Bowl customers.

One of the business establishments that saw an increase in pizza orders Sunday was Footers Pizza, 248 S. Seventh St. in Terre Haute.

Manager/co-owner Lacey Bledsoe said the business usually gets a “a lot” more orders on Super Bowl Sunday compared with a regular Sunday.

For them, the Super Bowl rush usually begins around game kickoff and then “keeps on going until the Super Bowl is over,” Bledsoe said.

Peak time is during half time, Bledsoe said.

About an hour before kickoff, Bledsoe and the crew were busy preparing the pizzas and even already started delivering.

Employee Austen Dowell stored dough in the refrigerator and organized the sauces. He said it was his first time working Super Bowl Sunday at Footers. Among his duties were to answer phones and make preparations.

And speaking of dough, Bledsoe said she anticipated using most of the dough they have in stock, about 25 pounds of it for pizza. About five pounds may be used for breadsticks of different kinds.

The number of people ordering for delivery is normally higher than those who come in and eat at the restaurant, Bledsoe said. Pizza delivery seems like a good option for those who don’t feel like cooking for the game or those who don’t want to eat out.

The family-owned business has been serving Terre Haute customers for more than 20 years. Footers, Bledsoe said, was the name that her father, Ray, came up with inspired by the foot-long sandwich.

The business is co-owned by Bledsoe’s parents, Ray and Jennifer. Footers also serves salads, sandwiches and pasta.

Bledsoe has been working at the establishment “doing everything” for eight years.

And she and her crew were ready for the Super Bowl rush.

“It won’t be my first time,” she said.
