Voting centers get OK from Vigo Election Board

TERRE HAUTE — The Vigo County Election Board on Tuesday voted to enact a plan for vote centers in the county, starting in 2014.

Voting centers will replace the former method of voting at precincts throughout the county.

The board voted following a second public hearing on the centers at the Vigo County Annex. The Vigo County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday, prior to the Election Board, also voted to approve the plan. The Vigo County Council earlier this month voted to approve the plan presented by the Election Board.

The plan required the approval of all three entities to be enacted.

The county will provide 18 voting centers on election day.

In addition, the Vigo County Annex will be open two weeks before an election for absentee voting. Then, one week before an election, seven of the voting centers will open for absentee ballots.

Those seven sites are Baesler’s Market, the former Indiana State Police post, Valley Grill, Booker T. Washington Community Center, New Life Fellowship Church, West Terre Haute Community Center and Kroger North.

The remaining 10 vote centers will be open on election day. Those sites include the Prairieton Methodist Church, New Goshen Firehouse, Wabash Valley Fairgrounds, Riley Fire Department, Lawton Byrum VFW Post No. 972, Sandcut Firehouse, Blackhawk Firehouse, Pimento Firehouse, the National Guard Armory on Maple Avenue and the Vigo County Public Library.

“I think [voter centers] will save taxpayers dollars in the long and will be more convenient for people,” said Vigo County Commissioner Brad Anderson. “The present precinct idea is antiquated. Today, we all travel to go places, such as shopping. When you go shopping, you can then go vote. Another concern was we wanted voting out of the schools for the security,” Anderson said.
