TERRE HAUTE —
A Terre Haute man died early Wednesday after witnesses reported that he doused himself in gasoline and set himself on fire.
Assistant Chief Shawn Keen of the Terre Haute Police Department told the Tribune-Star that the man was distraught about a relationship ending. Witnesses reported that he barricaded himself inside a garage in the 2300 block of Eighth Avenue, poured fuel on himself and lit the fuel.
The witnesses tried to break out windows of the garage but were unsuccessful in reaching the man, who eventually ran out of the garage and fell on the lawn.
He was airlifted to an Indianapolis hospital for treatment, but died at 7 a.m., Keen said. Police got the call at about midnight.
An autopsy is planned for this morning in Marion County.
Keen said the man’s name was being withheld pending notification of relatives.
