New info released on Sullivan County homicide

Seeking information on safe stolen from home

TERRE HAUTE — An investigation into a December 2012 homicide in Sullivan County received renewed attention Wednesday with the release of information about an item taken from the home of the man who was killed, Lowell Badger.

Indiana State Police detectives are looking for a safe — described as light to medium gray and measuring 231⁄2 inches tall, 17 inches deep and 17 inches wide. The safe was reportedly in pristine condition and was manufactured by John D. Brush and Co.

ISP Sgt. Joe Watts said the safe is heavy, but it could have been carried from the Badger home by a strong person. It would have been easier for two people to carry the safe, he said.

The public is asked to report any possible sightings of such a safe, which could possibly turn up at resale shops, yard sales, salvage yards or discarded in a remote area. Police released a photo of a safe similar to the one taken from Badger’s home.

Badger was found dead in his home at 10000 block of West County Road 350 North in Sullivan County on Dec. 8, 2012. Investigators determined that he died some time between 8 p.m. Dec. 7 and 9:23 a.m. Dec. 8 during a home invasion. He was found dead on his bedroom floor with a gunshot wound.

Previously, police released information about a black 46-inch Sony Bravia LCD television that was also taken from Badger’s residence during the home invasion.

Police met with the Badger family on Wednesday, which would have been Badger’s 86th birthday and his 64th wedding anniversary. Lowell and his wife, Nellie, farmed and raised a family in Sullivan County.

A $38,000 reward fund has been established and is available for anyone who provides information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the Badger homicide. Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact First Sgt. Jeff Hearon or Detective Tom Hanks at the Putnamville ISP Post at 765-653-4114, or the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Department at 812-268-4044.

Tips can also be submitted by calling Crime Stoppers at 812-238 STOP or 800-222-TIPS, or online at www.wvcrimestoppers.org.
