Man faces charges after allegedly fleeing injury accident

TERRE HAUTE — A Terre Haute man faces criminal charges after he allegedly fled the scene of an accident that injured three people near Seelyville on Tuesday evening.

Joseph A. Duregger, 42, appeared in Vigo Superior Court 6 via video on Wednesday where Judge Michael Lewis found probable cause for his arrest on charges of leaving the scene of an accident resulting in serious bodily injury and driving as a habitual traffic violator.

Indiana State Police Trooper Hans Novak testified that troopers responded to a two-vehicle accident on Old Fort Harrison Road west of Hunt Road in eastern Vigo County at about 8:43 p.m. Tuesday. They found that a westbound vehicle  was struck head-on by a rental van, and the driver of the eastbound vehicle had fled the scene on foot. A man, woman and 4-year-old child were injured in the crash.

An inspection of the rental van revealed a cell phone, pay stub and a bag of personal items belonging to Duregger, but the suspect was no longer in the area.

At about 12:35 a.m. Wednesday, a Vigo County sheriff’s deputy found a man wearing wet and muddy clothes walking eastbound on Old Fort Harrison Road. The man, who policed said appeared intoxicated, was identified as Duregger. At the Vigo County Jail, the man declined to be questioned by police.

Judge Lewis set another hearing in the case for Monday, and set Duregger’s bail at $35,000 cash only.
