THPD swears in two new officers

TERRE HAUTE — Two new officers have been sworn to duty for the Terre Haute Police Department.

Benjamin Kyle Toney and Matthew Robert Murray were hired Wednesday, and Mayor Duke Bennett administered the oaths to the new officers.

Murray has been an officer with the Indiana State University Police Department for more than four years.

Toney has no prior law enforcement experience, but his brother, Officer Don Toney, was hired by THPD in June and is now in training at the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy.

Toney has a degree in marketing from Indiana State University, but said his career choice is being a police officer.

“I’ve always had an interest in it since I was a young boy,” Toney said.

Police Chief John Plasse said that having brothers on the department is not new, but having them hired so close together is.

“They grew up together, and to have them grow up together on the job is important,” Plasse said.

Toney said he hopes for the best with his new career.

“I am extremely excited to do this,” he said.

Murray said he looks forward to having more opportunities on the city police force.

“And, I get to serve the community I grew up in,” said the Terre Haute South Vigo graduate. Murray earned an associate’s degree from Ivy Tech Community College and is working on another degree at Indiana State.

The ISU police force has become an officer source for THPD in recent months, Chief Plasse noted

“I kinda feel guilty because we’re taking their good officers, but not that guilty,” he said.

Both Plasse and Mayor Bennett thanked the many relatives of the new officers who attended Wednesday’s swearing-in ceremony.

Plasse said that family support is important for all department members as he welcomed Toney and Murray to the THPD family.
