Suspect charged with armed robbery in cab heist

TERRE HAUTE — A Terre Haute man who allegedly held a gun to a cab driver’s head on Oct. 5 has been charged with armed robbery.

David M. Wilson, 30, faces the class-B felony charge in Vigo Superior Court I, where he appeared on video for a Thursday morning hearing.

Wilson was arrested Wednesday evening after police investigated the robbery of $160 from a cab driver, who told police that he picked up a suspect at a gas station in Georgetown, Ill., and drove the person to Terre Haute. The suspect paid in advance for the $150 trip, the taxi driver said, and the suspect carried on a friendly conversation during the ride to Terre Haute.

According to a probable cause affidavit, the suspect told the driver to pull into a parking lot in the 400 block of North 13th Street, and that is when the suspect put a gun to the driver’s head and demanded cash. The suspect took the money and fled on foot.

The suspect had given the driver a false name, but police were able to find friends of the suspect who provided the correct name of David Wilson, according to authorities.

The taxi driver and a gas station attendant both selected Wilson as the suspect when shown a photo lineup.

Wilson is being held in the Vigo County Jail with bail set at $75,000 cash only. His next court date is Oct. 16 to set trial dates.

Wilson was appointed  public defender.
