Trial date set for man in ‘knockout game’

Man, woman hit unexpectedly

TERRE HAUTE — A Terre Haute man faces a class-C felony for allegedly punching two people in what police are calling the “knockout game.”

Kevin William Doti, 22, has a June 16 trial date on a charged of attempted battery resulting in serious bodily injury, along with the misdemeanors of battery and criminal mischief.

Terre Haute Police report that Doti was at a bar in the 800 block of Wabash Avenue on Dec. 23 when he allegedly punched two people in the back of the head as hard as he could. When Doti attempted to punch a third person, that man grabbed Doti and wrestled him to the ground before calling police.

In a probable cause affidavit filed Jan. 9 in Vigo Superior Court 6, Detective Troy Davis reports that surveillance video shows that Doti was talking with two other men before walking over to the bar where the victims were seated with their backs to him. The video shows Doti strike one man in the back of the head in an apparent attempt to render the man unconscious.

Doti then struck a woman in the same manner and tried to hit the third person.

According to Wikipedia, the “knockout game is one of many names given to assaults in which, purportedly, one or more assailants attempt to knock out an unsuspecting victim, often with a single sucker punch, all for the amusement of the attackers and their accomplices.”

Doti is next set to appear in court May 29.
