Board preps for first meeting of year

TERRE HAUTE — As the schools welcome students back today, members of the Vigo County School Board are also set to meet later tonight for their first meeting of the year.

The meeting will be in the Board Room at the Administration Building, Vigo County School Corp., 686 Wabash Ave. in downtown Terre Haute.

An organizational meeting will be conducted first at 6 p.m. where the board will elect officers and discuss different appointments for the year 2014, said Superintendent Dan Tanoos.

The board is expected to elect a president, vice president, secretary and deputy secretary. Appointments include the Vigo County School Corp. treasurer and deputy treasurer, among others.

The organizational meeting will be followed by a finance meeting, which by law has to be separate, Tanoos said. During the meeting, members will discuss the financial picture of the school system, he said. According to the agenda, the Board of Finance will also elect its officers for 2014 and review revenue from investments.

The main school board meeting will follow the finance meeting at approximately 6:20 p.m. In addition to a personnel report, the board may also discuss and vote on a yearly schedule for bidding.

A policy requires the administration to submit to the board a list of items that may need to be purchased for the year, if necessary. The list this year includes general furniture and equipment, computer equipment, vehicles and school bus units, according to the agenda.

The agenda also includes a discussion and possible approval of a Professional Development Schools grant requested by West Vigo High School. The grant is in conjunction with Indiana State University. The amount is $1,800.

“The goal of the PDS grant is to address school improvement initiatives through collaborative planning in the areas of English and Math. … Teachers will discuss ways to better meet needs of all students. Teachers will share ideas about instructional strategies and use of technology,” according to the agenda packet.
