Man seriously injured in truck, SUV crash

PIMENTO — An accident between a box truck and an SUV in southern Vigo County Friday night sent one man to a local hospital with severe injuries, authorities said.

The driver of the SUV sustained severe facial and head trauma, Linton Township Fire Department officials told the Tribune-Star at the scene.

The injured man had to be extricated from the vehicle, said Linton Township Fire Department Assistant Chief Michael Pruitt.

The driver of the truck was not injured and signed a release, he said.

The crash occurred amidst the heavy Friday night rain around 9 p.m. near the intersection of U.S. 41 and Pimento Circle.

Authorities said the SUV was headed west out of Pimento Circle when the crash occurred with the box truck heading north on U.S. 41. The truck crossed the median and landed on a ditch by the southbound lane of U.S. 41. The front end of the SUV, which remained in the northbound land, had major damage, including a broken windshield.

Alcohol is suspected, Pruitt said.

An Indiana State Trooper who responded at the scene was observed picking up a bottle of alcohol from around the SUV.

Traffic was backed up in the northbound lane of U.S. 41.

Among the responders at the scene were the Linton Township Fire Department, the Vigo County Sheriff’s Office, Indiana State Police and Honey Creek Fire Department.
