Terre Haute man not injured in Owen crash

SPENCER — A Terre Haute man was not injured in a fatal crash Monday afternoon in Owen County.

Chief Deputy Greg Denny of the Owen County Sheriff's Department reports that the accident occurred east of Spencer on Indiana 46 around 4:21 p.m., just west of the Owen-Monroe county line.

Denny reports that an eastbound car driven by Gary Staggs, 60, of Bedford, sideswiped another vehicle, then slid into the path of a westbound car driven by Reinhard Groth, 61, of Terre Haute. Groth was not injured in the crash. The Staggs’ vehicle then slid into the path of another car. Two people in that car were transported to Bloomington Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

Staggs was pronounced dead at the scene by the Owen County Coroner’s office.

The highway was closed for about three hours during investigation of the accident. The Indiana State Police assisted in the investigation.
