Wabash Valley Correctional Facility inmate in critical after attack

CARLISLE — An inmate of the Wabash Valley Correctional Facility in Carlisle was transferred to an Indianapolis hospital in critical condition Wednesday after being struck in the head with a dumbbell by another offender.

Billy J. Lemond, 40, was stabilized at Sullivan County Community Hospital before being transferred to Wishard Hospital, Indianapolis, according to an Indiana State Police report.

He was listed in critical condition upon admittance. Hospital officials said they had no additional status information later Wednesday.

State police detectives were called to the Sullivan County Community Hospital around 8 p.m. Tuesday to investigate a battery complaint.

According to a facility report, Lemond was allegedly struck in the head with a 10-pound dumbbell while in the weight room. Detectives said they have no motive yet for why offender John Dain, 32, would have attacked Lemond.

Dain was in segregation on Wednesday, pending possible criminal charges and prison disciplinary sanction for the incident.

According to a facility report, Dain had been scheduled for release in June after completing a nine-year sentence for multiple Clinton County offenses, including battery and intimidation.

According to the Indiana Department of Correction’s Web site, Lemond was serving a 45-year sentence out of Pike County for attempted murder and criminal recklessness.

The Wabash Valley Correctional Facility is a maximum/minimum security facility housing more than 2,100 offenders.
