Putnamville troopers assisting motorists

TERRE HAUTE — Indiana State Police troopers from the Putnamville continue to assist motorists along Indiana roadways. The trouble spots today have been Interstate 70, Interstate 74, U.S. 41 South, and Indiana 63 North in Vigo and Vermillion counties. The busiest spots along I-70 have been eastern Vigo County and western Clay County, as well as eastern Putnam County.

Since 12:01 this morning until noon, troopers have responded to 19 vehicle slide-offs, one property damage crash, and four mechanically disabled vehicles. Troopers have transported a number of motorists to local motels or restaurants for shelter.

Traffic in the district is currently light and there are no major problems at this time.

Motorists are strongly urged to refrain from driving and stay home. The frigid temperatures and blowing and drifting snow present a dangerous environment should you become stranded. Motorists may forget that the weather conditions cause emergency services response times to increase.

The Indiana State Police Region III Dispatch Center has been busy with providing calls to troopers and maintaining communications with the troopers to ensure their safety. Citizens are asked to not call local, county, or state dispatch centers for road conditions.

Road conditions are available at http://indot.carsprogram.org/ or by dialing toll-free 800-261-ROAD (7623). For up-to-date county travel statuses, Hoosiers are encouraged to visit http://www.in.gov/dhs/traveladvisory/.
