Golf scramble to benefit doc with cancer

By Brian M. Boyce

TERRE HAUTE Friends and family of a local physician will bogey up and boogie down next weekend in support of his fight against leukemia.

“We definitely want to keep him in our thoughts and prayers,” said colleague and friend Dr. Darren Brucken, explaining that “Dr. [Daniel] Bedecki relapsed after 14 months in remission.”

Brucken and others will host a golf scramble Sept. 13 with a shotgun start at 12:30 and registration at noon.

Brucken said Bedecki will require a bone marrow transplant from a sibling and is undergoing chemotherapy.

While a relapse after 14 months is “not unexpected,” physicians would have preferred to see the remission last at least two years, he said.

Fees will be $100 per player with four to a team, and the group is selling hole sponsorships for $100.

A silent auction will be hosted afterward, as will two hours of free Zumba instruction from 5 to 7 p.m. with a free-will donation accepted, Brucken said. Zumba is an aerobic exercise based on a variety of Latin dances.

Bedecki’s patients are being transferred, as it is unlikely he will return to outpatient practice soon, he noted.

Fliers are posted at the Idle Creek Pro Shop as well as at both Union Hospital and Terre Haute Regional Hospital. For more information, call Brucken’s office at (812) 299-8280.
