A car caught on fire Thursday evening in Terre Haute Mayor Duke Bennett’s garage, which firefighters managed to extinguish before his home was damaged.
The mayor, who lives in a subdivision east of the city, was not at home at the time.
Firefighters said neighbors of the Bennett’s saw smoke and flames coming from underneath the car about 8:30 p.m.
The Bennett’s daughter had driven the Grand Prix home and parked it in the garage.
Helpers tried to put the fire out with hoses and a fire extinguisher before firefighters arrived.
Damage was limited to the car and garage.
The home may have incurred some smoke damage, firefighters said.
The mayor could not be reached for comment late Thursday.
