American Red Cross, other organizations arrive to help

Staff report
The Tribune-Star

TERRE HAUTE Terre Haute victims of last weekend’s flash flooding continue to receive help from the American Red Cross and other organizations.

The Red Cross has set up family service centers at the Booker T. Washington Park Community Center at 13th Street and College Avenue in Terre Haute, and the West Vigo Community Center at 127 W. Johnson Ave. in West Terre Haute. Family service workers are on-site to assess the disaster needs of individual families affected by the flood, and to provide what relief assistance is available.

Carol Stevens, executive director of the Wabash Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross, emphasized that it is important for families in need to go to the Red Cross for assistance.

Stevens also said that the Southern Baptist Mobile Kitchen has arrived. The kitchen is capable of cooking 2,500 meals each for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Red Cross workers will pick up the meals and distribute them in neighborhoods affected by the flooding.

Terre Haute received nearly 7 inches of rain Saturday, causing flash flooding throughout the area. An estimated 25,000 Vigo County residents were affected by the disaster.
