Assistant recommended as new North principal

TERRE HAUTE — Pending official approval by the Vigo County School Corp.’s board of trustees, Terre Haute North Vigo High School will have a new principal this fall.

Superintendent Dan Tanoos said that when he made a late Tuesday evening announcement on his office’s recommendation of Stacy L. Mason for the job, the high-school staff responded with as loud a standing ovation as he’s ever heard.

“As we began to think about who we might recommend to the School Board for this very important position, Stacy’s name continued to rise to the top of the list in every discussion,” he said of the current assistant principal, describing her as a “very talented educator.”

Mason, herself a 1991 North graduate, said, “I’m definitely looking forward to it.”

Tanoos will present his recommendation to the School Board for official approval at its meeting June 9, but he was given permission to announce his decision to the staff Tuesday, he said.

Mason earned her undergraduate degree in elementary education at Indiana University’s Bloomington campus before receiving her master’s degree in special education from Indiana State University, where she also obtained an administrator’s license.

Along with teaching in the classroom, Mason has served as a dean of students and assistant principal.

Tanoos said Mason was mentored by outgoing principal Mick Newport, “one of the most talented principals I’ve ever had the pleasure to work with.”

Newport is vacating the principal’s position for a promotion within the school corporation.

“He’s laid a great groundwork and a great foundation,” Mason said of her predecessor. “We want to carry on and keep moving forward.”

Mason’s husband, Travis, teaches at Chauncey Rose Middle School, and the two have three children.

Tanoos said an announcement about the open principal position at Terre Haute South Vigo High School will be made soon.
