Learn more about ‘History, Heritage, and Heroes’

Special to the Tribune-Star

TERRE HAUTE The public is invited to a reception and brochure release at Arts Illiana from 5 to 6:30 p.m. today as part of the "History, Heritage, and Heroes" street banner project honoring local African-Americans.

The banners are decorating downtown light poles on Wabash Avenue and the ISU campus. The project recognizes the achievements of notable African-Americans from Terre Haute as a way of celebrating local heritage.

It is underwritten by AllState Insurance and local AllState agents Bryan Sponsler and Tom Pitts, as part of AllState’s “Beyond February” initiative to recognize the importance of black history throughout the year. Other sponsors include Bemis, Sony DADC, ISU Foundation, ISU African-American Cultural Center, Terre Haute Human Relations Commission, Oscar Session, Time Warner Cable, Lamar Advertising, the Tribune Star and Downtown Terre Haute Inc.

The brochure includes a brief biography of each of the individuals honored on the banners, and will be available at Arts Illiana and the Vigo County Public Library as well as downtown stores, banks, restaurants and art galleries.

The Arts Illiana gallery is at 23 N. Sixth St.

For more information, call Andrew Conner of Downtown Terre Haute Inc. at (812) 237-2581.
