College to conduct drumming workshops

Special to the Tribune-Star

ROBINSON, Ill. Lincoln Trail College in Robinson, Ill., will conduct four iDrum world drumming workshops this summer.

University of Illinois senior Brandon Catt will lead the sessions, which use hand drums from African and Caribbean cultures.

No previous music experience is necessary to enroll. Participants will make music together and have an opportunity to lead the group.

The advanced workshop, for those who participated last year, will be from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. July 21 to 25.

New students, in grades 3 through 12, are invited to participate in the beginning (open) workshop from 3 to 5 p.m. July 21 to 25. These weeklong workshops are $25 per person and will be conducted in the Zwermann Arts Center theater.

College credit is available for students ages 14 and above.

On July 28, parents and children in grades three and older are invited to learn together as part of the parent-child class.

The session will meet from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the theater and will be conducted in a traditional drum circle format. Cost is $10. Food will be provided courtesy of First Robinson Savings Bank.

A final workshop for teachers and adults will meet from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. July 29 in the theater. Cost is $10.

In this workshop, community members and teachers of all subject areas will learn how they can borrow and use the iDrums and other percussion equipment in their Crawford County classrooms and organizations.

Using drums from around the world to teach third-grade math or high-school science is an exciting cross-curricular experience for students.

Drum circles also are being used at business employee meetings and with many church and community organizations.

Food will be provided courtesy of First Robinson Savings Bank.

To register, or for more information, contact Community Service at LTC at (618) 544-8657, ext. 1427 or Brandon Catt at bcatt2@uiuc.edu.
