Brazil Concert Band celebrates 150 years

BRAZIL The Brazil Concert Band, under the direction of Matthew S. Huber, is celebrating the band’s 150 years of continuous operation all summer long.

Sesquicentennial Celebration will begin at 8 p.m. Sunday at the Forest Park band shell, or pavilion if rain.

Guest artist is Kendra Kirby, director of music at the World Gospel Church in Terre Haute. She will sing the music from “My Fair Lady,” arranged by Bennett to include “With a Little Bit of Luck,” “On the Street Where you Live,” “Wouldn't it be Loverly” and “I’ve Grown Accustomed to her Face.”

Straight from Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull will be “The Raider’s March” by John Williams.

In 1934, Karl L. King wrote “The Lieutenant Commander” in the style of John Philip Sousa, who had recently passed away. Also by King, the BCB will perform the serenade, “A Night In June.”

Sousa’s “The Volunteers” was written during World War I and was dedicated to Terre Haute native Edward C. Hurley, chairman of the United States Shipping Board and the Ship Builders of America.

The BCB will present Sousa’s “Balance All and Swing Partners” and “The Picadore.”

Classic of the week is Richard Wagner’s stately “Elsa’s Procession to the Cathedral.”

The “Carnival of Roses Overture” by Olivadoti and “The Turtle Waddle” by Guentzel will be played.

The Jackson Township Community Band will be on parade and in concert 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday in Merom.
