Covered Bridge Art Gallery offers summer classes to youth

MECCA — The Covered Bridge Art Gallery in Rockville is offering classes to students who will be in the fourth, fifth and sixth grades next fall. The fee for each week of classes is $10. No child will be turned away for inability to pay.

Instructors are members of the gallery and have generously volunteered their time. All classes will be conducted in the Art Gallery in Rockville, on the north side of the square. Space is limited to 10 children per class. Class time is 9 to 11 a.m.

Registration deadline is Sunday. A waiting list will be available in case of a cancellation. Call the Art Gallery at (765) 569-9422 for more information. Regular hours for the gallery are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Week 1: Monday to June 6

• Exploring clay with Judy Ohmit, local potter and owner of Sassafras Ridge Pottery.

Children will make musical instruments, creative pinch pots and kaleidoscopes. Each child will be encouraged to explore and create with clay. Pieces will be bisque-fired and painted with acrylic paints.

Week 2, 3: ($10 per week) June 9-13 and June 16-20:

• Malcom Moore and Bob Stites, local artists and photographers

Because of work schedules, both gentlemen will team-teach these two weeks.

Children will explore the wonderful world of photography by creating a pinhole camera, learn ways to color their photographs, and more to be announced.

Week 4: June 23-27:

• Jan McVay, art teacher and local artist. ”Anyone Can Learn to Draw”

Children will be taught to transfer left brain thinking over to right brain thinking and in so doing, explore the wonderful world of drawing.
