Art Colony features photographer, painter, multimedia artist in August

Gaslight Art Colony welcomes three artists for the month of August. Photographer Richard Beasley, painter Pria Rahmouni and multimedia artist Julia London-Meddles will show their work beginning Saturday, with an artists’ reception from 6 to 9 p.m. in the Marshall, Ill., gallery.

Beasley was born in California, moved to Parke County as a young child and then came to Vigo County. He has enjoyed the beauty of nature during all of these experiences. His photography career started with an Olympus pocket camera and, as his passion for photography grew, he gravitated toward abstract art, from concrete, steel and glass to the mountains that tower over humans.

Art in various forms has always been a part of Rahmouni’s life, but it was not until she created a portrait as a gift to a close relative that she discovered her love for painting. Since then she has created numerous works that have been exhibited in various art shows in the Wabash Valley.

Her primary media are acrylic and oil. While initially human faces tended to be the primary focus of her paintings, in recent years she has created several works that reflect her passion for traveling and exploring the world.

Her paintings are cheerful, with a vibrant and exaggerated color palette, because she prefers to dwell on the positive.

Over time, there has been a gradual shift in her paintings from realism to abstraction, though a majority of her paintings lie in the middle.

London-Meddles is an award-winning artist who resides in Terre Haute. She is a member of the Hoosier Salon, Gaslight Artist Colony and numerous other art associations in Indiana and Illinois. She has had a busy 2013, starting in January with painting on live television in the United Cerebral Palsy Telethon, to which she donated three paintings.

In April, she participated in the Hoosier Salon’s First Brush of Spring ‘en plein air’ (in open air) paint-out in New Harmony.

In May, her “The Cow in Mr. Frisket” won third place in the professional division at the Effingham Art Guild’s spring show.

In July, she won third place in the Hoosier Salon’s plein air paint-out in Wabash.

Gaslight Art Colony, a not-for-profit organization, promotes awareness, participation and understanding through fine arts exhibitions, classes and workshops.
