'Spirit of Competition' at Children's Museum Sept 4-8, 17-29

Museum to close for maintenance Sept. 9-16

TERRE HAUTE — Hop on a bike and try to match Major Taylor’s blistering track speed. Have a civil debate about city vs. country. Watch a short film about Philo Farnsworth, an inventor from Indiana that should be credited with inventing the television.

All of this is possible at the interactive “Spirit of Competition” exhibit that features stories about Hoosier competitors. The traveling exhibit, created by Indiana Humanities, will be on display at the Terre Haute Children’s Museum during the month of September. The exhibit is visiting the Museum thanks to the generosity of the Terre Haute Convention and Visitors Bureau.

The exhibit includes short films on Hoosier competition-related stories, such as:

• Marshall "Major" Taylor, a world-champion cyclist

• Philo Farnsworth, the inventor of the television

• Larry Bird and Magic Johnson, the classic rivalry

• Gebisa Ejeta, a World Food Prize winner and Purdue University professor

• Madam C.J. Walker, the first African American millionaire

“We all engage in competition every day – whether it’s by participating in an extracurricular activity, selling a product, creating an innovative solution or trying to beat an opponent on the campaign trail,” said Keira Amstutz, president and CEO of Indiana Humanities. “This exhibit teaches us that competition affects us all and contributes to our individual character, as well as the culture of our local communities and our state.”

The “Spirit of Competition” exhibit will be on display at the Terre Haute Children’s Museum Sept. 4 through Sept. 8 and Sept. 17 through Sept. 29. The Museum will be closed for cleaning and maintenance Sept. 9 through Sept. 16. When the Museum reopens on Sept. 17, Museum admission will be discounted to $5 per person, and that admission price will be offered through Sept. 29.
