Red Skelton Museum sees 1,000 visitors in 3 weeks

VINCENNES, Ind. — A new museum that toasts the career of comedian Red Skelton has attracted nearly 1,000 visitors to the late comic’s southwestern Indiana hometown in its first three weeks.

The Red Skelton Museum of American Comedy opened July 18 in Vincennes on the 100th anniversary of Skelton’s birth.

Museum spokeswoman Anne Pratt said Thursday that nearly 1,000 people have visited the museum since its two-day grand opening attracted another 1,100 visitors, including longtime Skelton friend and “M-A-S-H” actor Jamie Farr.

The Vincennes Sun-Commercial reports that the museum features memorabilia and videos about Skelton’s influence on early television and comedy with his characters, such as Freddie the Freeloader, on “The Red Skelton Show.”

Skelton died in 1997 at age 84.
