Crawford County historical museum featuring replica of Lincoln’s coffin until April 22

A replica of Abraham Lincoln’s coffin is on display through April 22 at the Crawford County Historical Society museum on South Cross Street in Robinson, Ill.

The museum will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, Saturday, Tuesday, April 19 and 20, and from 2 to 4 p.m. on April 22.

A “Night at the Museum” exhibit is scheduled for 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, and a presentation about Lincoln’s death and funeral is scheduled for 2 to 4 p.m. on Monday at Lincoln Trail College.

The displays are in honor of the 148th anniversary of Lincoln’s death.

According to a story in the Robinson Daily News, the coffin is “an authentic replica of the one Lincoln’s body traveled in as it made its way from Washington, D.C., to his burial site in Springfield, Ill.

“The original coffin was six feet, six inches long and constructed of solid walnut. It was covered in black broadcloth with a white satin interior. The outside was adorned with silver plate handles, along with silver and pearl tacks arranged in a decorative pattern. There was also a silver plate inscribed with Lincoln’s date of birth and death attached to the top.

“The replica coffin, that will be on display, has many of the same features as the original, but is not lined with lead, nor does it have the inscribed silver plate.”

The coffin was made by Batesville Casket Co., Batesville, Ind., in 1865.

Also on display will be Civil War era pieces from the museum’s collection, including an original “New York Herald,” dated April 15, 1865, telling of Lincoln’s assassination.

There is no charge for the presentations, but patrons are asked to make a freewill donation in the form of pennies — which, of course, bear Lincoln’s likeness.
