CANDLES to show film on ‘British Schindler’

TERRE HAUTE — The film, “Nicky’s Family,” will be shown at 5:30 pm. on Feb. 20 in the CANDLES Holocaust Museum and Education Center at 1532 S. Third St. Admission is free. Pizza will be served at 5 p.m.

Nicky’s Family tells of Sir Nicholas Winton, known by many as the “British Schindler,” who organized the rescue of 669 children from Prague just before the outbreak of World War II. Winton remained silent about his heroic efforts for more than a half-century, until 1988, when his wife uncovered a suitcase in the attic full of documents and plans.

Today the story of Winton’s rescue is known all over the world. Now 104 years old, he has been knighted by Queen Elisabeth II and honored by Congress for his remarkable deed.

A discussion and Q&A session is planned with Dr. Renata Laxova, one of Sir Nicky’s surviving "children," who escaped Prague for England on one of Winton’s Kindertransport trains at midnight on July 31, 1939.

For more information, contact Dorothy Chambers, CANDLES program coordinator, at (812) 234-7881 or dorothy@candles After 4 p.m. call (812) 878-1272. Free parking is available on site.
