River City to feature artist’s fused glass pieces in July

Each month the River City Arts Association of Terre Haute selects one of its members to display work in the Vigo County Public Library. During the month of July, that display will be several of Edith Acton’s fused glass wall hangings.

For the past nine years Acton has been an active member of Terre Haute’s art organizations, including RCAA, Wabash Valley Art Guild, Arts Illiana and Rivers and Roads Artisan Trail.

Throughout the year, she displays her work at galleries in the surrounding communities and in local art centers. Most of her work is composed of wall hangings; however, making jewelry is a favorite sideline.

Acton has a broad assortment of interests that keep her constantly active. One favorite interest is traveling the United States and the world. Countless ideas come back with her from each trip. A new interesting color combination, an architectural structure, and a view of a countryside are examples of things that will inspire an idea.

A wall hanging titled “Lonely Tree” was a result of seeing a single tree in a field that seemed to need to be reproduced into something everyone could enjoy. A visit to the Church of the Savior in St. Petersburg, Russia, led to the work “Belief.” The ideas for two recent hangings came from watching her grandchildren play with blocks of squares and triangles.

Although most of the glass designs seem to be abstract, there is always a basic idea that has created the need in the artist to transfer into artwork something that was seen or felt.

Acton has been interested in art throughout her life. While earning her degree at Indiana State University, she enrolled in many art classes. Those classes gave her the basic knowledge of the key elements for constructing any artwork of choice. After attempting countless media, she has found her favorite choice — fused glass. She says that even after nine years, there is still so much to learn.
