Works by River City’s Monty Jones on display this month at library

TERRE HAUTE — River City Art Association and Vigo County Public Library are displaying artwork by Vigo County native Monty Jones through November in the library at Seventh and Poplar streets.

Being born a Hoosier, Jones grew up on fishing, trapping, collecting arrow heads and hunting wild game, mushrooms and ginseng. He also took an interest in drawing and painting — mostly wildlife and landscapes, at first — which led to a correspondence art course in his early adult life. But supporting a growing family with a job in the offset printing trade kept him from pursuing art until he retired at age 60.

Jones started doing woodcarving, gourd art and pyrography (wood burning) then soon branched out into acrylic painting. He has won many awards around the state, including Eagle Creek Park in Indianapolis and Covered Bridge Art Association in Rockville, where he took Best of Show in the Associates Show in 2005 and 2006.

In the Indiana Wildlife Artists Show, he has taken second place twice in the last few years. He also won Best of Show in ISU'S Artomobilia Show in 2010.

Jones now works from his home studio painting cars, pets, wildlife and landscape art. He and his wife reside in Terre Haute and have three adult children.

Prospective RCAA members are invited to attend meetings on the second Tuesday of each month. For more information, visit rivercityart.org or contact RCAA president Todd Stokes at 812-232-0048.
