CANDLES Museum to host film on sexual politics during the Holocaust

TERRE HAUTE — CANDLES Holocaust Museum and Education Center will host Dr. Ralph Leck for a discussion of sexual politics during the Holocaust from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday in the museum at 1532 S. Third St.

“The Perfect Enemy: Magnus Hirschfeld and the Persecution of Homosexuals in Nazi Germany” will begin with a short student-made film identifying the Other Victims, non-Jewish groups targeted by the Nazis. Attendance is free. Pizza will be available to attendees prior to the event.

Leck’s current research project is titled Vita Sexualis: The History of Sexual Science in Europe, 1860-1900 (forthcoming from Berghahn Press). He is also working on a project titled “Westermarck’s Morocco: Anthropological Sexology and the End of Orientalism” and has been invited to present this research at the Leslie Humanities Center, Dartmouth College. His intellectual history of a German philosopher and pioneering sociologist of modernity — Georg Simmel and Avant-Garde Sociology (Humanity Books) — is available on amazon.com. Besides intellectual history and sexual science, he has also published in the area of feminism and gender history.

More information on this event can be found at candlesholocaustmuseum.org or by calling (812) 234-7881.
