Late summer is one of the busiest times of year in our always-busy newsroom. The mid-summer lull is over for government entities. Schools and colleges are back in session and generating news. Local sports are under way. And community festivals and special events fill the calendar.
As if that’s not enough, it’s also the time of year when Tribune-Star reporters, editors, photographers and page designers are putting finishing touches on a project we call the “progress edition,” a large, multi-section package devoted to the annual review and update of business, industry and institutional activity associated with those segments of the community that make Terre Haute and Vigo County what it is today.
It’s a big job, but the end result is more than worth the effort.
This year’s “progress edition” — Community Update 2013 — is being printed this week at the Tribune-Star’s production plant on East Margaret Avenue and will be inserted into your Saturday newspaper. It is a hefty four sections and 48 pages, all color, and is being printed on paper that’s much whiter and heavier than normal newsprint. That’s how serious we take this project.
Community Update 2013 is the culmination of work that began in early summer. Assistant Editor Susan Duncan, as she has done in all five years the “progress edition” has been produced, directed the content planning, reporting and photo-gathering. Every reporter and photographer on our news staff contributed substantially to the product.
After the content was ready and Susan completed her editing process, the project was passed to our experienced and talented copy editing/page design staff, which is supervised by Alicia Morgan. Alicia carries the title of Features Editor but does so very much more for us. Under her creative eye, the sections were skillfully designed, produced and prepared for the printing process.
Meanwhile, the staff continued to produce content for the daily newspaper throughout the period. It was truly a special effort.
Since we began publishing an annual “progress edition” in 2009, we’ve emphasized the pillars of the community that serve as a foundation for the local economy and culture — business, manufacturing, health and education. Along the way, we’ve featured sub-sectors such as retail, tourism and the arts.
You’ll find great stories in this year’s edition, stories about people, public and private companies and institutions that remind us all that we live in a community of which we can be proud.
In all, Community Update 2013 is a companywide collaboration that includes big contributions from our advertising and circulation departments, as well as production teams.
The project has been popular with readers the past four years, and we’re confident you will enjoy it again this year.
