MARK BENNETT: Current Information: Put your Wabash knowledge to the test … or quiz

TERRE HAUTE — Relax. This test isn’t standardized. It won’t go on your permanent record. We won’t use A-to-F grades, but if you’re compelled, feel free to calculate your own (and change them later, if they look too low).

Instead, this is merely a quiz. (A “quiz” always felt more casual than a “test” when I was a student. Imagine the comparative calm of a Scholastic Aptitude Quiz.) Just for fun, ponder a few questions concerning the large waterway flowing through Indiana and Terre Haute, as the Tribune-Star’s series, “500 Miles of Wabash” concludes in today’s editions. Those who’ve followed the five-part series of stories, photographs and videos about people and communities uniquely embracing the Wabash River may have a head start. If you’re just catching up, check them out in the online editions at www.tribstar.com.

Once you’re ready, grab a paddle (or a No. 2 pencil), and let’s shove off.

1. With just one water-control dam, the Wabash contains the longest stretch of free-flowing river (411 miles ) east of the Mississippi. Where is that lone dam located?

2. What is the longest stretch of free-flowing river in the United States?

3. “On the Banks of the Wabash, Far Away” by Terre Haute’s Paul Dresser became Indiana’s official state song in 1913. When did the Wabash become the official state river?

4. What is the largest city located along the Wabash?

5. What is the origin of the name “Wabash”?

6. Name four of the 12 major tributaries of the Wabash.

7. Where is the headwaters (or source) of the Wabash?

8. Name two of the significant military battles that occurred along the river.

9. Where is the only operating ferry on the Wabash located?

10. How did that ferry-boat town get its name?

11. How high is Merom Bluff?

12. Name three towns with pedestrian-only bridges across the Wabash.

13. The hero honored by the George Rogers Clark Memorial at Vincennes is not the Clark from Lewis and Clark fame. (That was George’s younger brother, William.) What was George’s big accomplishment?

14. Where did Abraham Lincoln first step onto Illinois soil?

15. Bald eagles disappeared from Indiana in the 1980s but have since returned to the Wabash and other areas in sustainable numbers through a reintroduction program. What caused their demise?

16. Only one covered bridge across the Wabash remains. Where is it located?

17. What southern Illinois town is no longer situated along the riverside?

18. What Wabash River town is home to the state’s tallest waterfalls?

19. How long would it take for a drop of water to travel from the Wabash headwaters in Ohio to the confluence with the Ohio River, 474.7 miles away?

20. Is it true the Wabash is a primary source of commercial caviar?

Exhale. That wasn’t so easy now, was it? Seriously, as Terre Haute’s 2013 Year of the River observance continues, get to know the Wabash better and maybe trade that imaginary paddle for a real one.
