METRO ROUNDUP: Rose men to face PSU-Behrend in NCAA tourney

TERRE HAUTE — Rose-Hulman’s men’s soccer team will travel to Penn State-Behrend for a 6 p.m. match Thursday in the opening round of the NCAA Division III men’s soccer championships.

The winner will take on second-ranked Ohio Wesleyan (19-0-3), which received a first-round bye, on Saturday in Delaware, Ohio.

Penn State Behrend (16-4-1) captured its sixth Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference championship Saturday, defeating Medaille 1-0. It was the Lions’ second title in the past three seasons.

After capturing Saturday’s Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference championship with a 1-0 overtime victory over Transylvania, the Engineers (11-5-4) earned their third trip to the NCAA Division III men’s soccer tournament.

Rose-Hulman’s last berth came in 2011, when the Engineers defeated Earlham 5-1 in the HCAC tournament championship and went on to play No. 8 Ohio Northern in the first round of the NCAAs, where they fell 2-0. Rose also advanced to the NCAA tournament in 2008, falling to Dominican 3-1 in the first round.

Drew Belk led the Engineers in goals nearly all season and accounted for the game-winner, his 15th goal of the season, in the 101st minute in Saturday’s championship win. Belk was named the HCAC Tournament MVP for his play, which included two goals in a 3-0 semifinal victory over Hanover.

Will Senat has eight goals and five assists and Ben Green three goals and eight assists. Keeper Drew Miller has been stellar in the net all season, as the Engineers set a new team record for shutouts with 11. Miller brings into the NCAA Tournament a 0.54 goals against average and a .857 save percentage, allowing just 11 goals in 20 contests.
