Phegley hits first career HR for White Sox

TH native slugged solo shot in sixth inning of loss to Rays

ST. PETERSBURG, FLA. — If you blink, you might miss another Josh Phegley milestone.

Two days after his Major League Baseball debut, Phegley hit his first career home run in the Chicago White Sox 3-1 loss at Tampa Bay on Sunday.

The Terre Haute native, playing just his second career game, hit the first David Price offering he saw in the sixth inning into the first row in Tropicana Field’s left field bleachers. Phegley’s solo blast accounted for the White Sox only run.

Price, who went the distance for the victory as he tries to return from a triceps injury, is the reigning AL Cy Young award winner.

“Not bad, I guess,” Phegley said of his homer off Price. “One run, a complete game is a pretty impressive start, but I guess I just got one on him. The home run was a cutter in, and it was just kind of low enough where I could to get to it and get in there enough. I put a good ride on it.”

For the day, Phegley was 1-for-4. His season batting average currently stands at .286. The Rays did not steal any bases against Phegley.

“He comes up here and doesn’t seem frazzled or anything like that,” White Sox manager Robin Ventura said. “You don’t really see the jitters.”

John Danks (2-6) allowed three runs and five hits over seven innings for the White Sox. The left-hander has lost all five of his road starts this year.

“I feel good about getting us deep in a game and keeping us in the ballgame, but I simply just got outpitched by David, obviously,” Danks said. “I just gave him too much of a cushion there, and he was able to be the reigning Cy Young winner.”

Price (3-4) worked around eight hits, walking none and striking out five. Price spent 47 days on the disabled list, then came back and struck out 10 in seven shutout innings against Houston.
