METRO ROUNDUP: South grad Stewart sixth for VU at NJCAA golf championship

Chautauqua. N.Y. — Vincennes University freshman Shelby Stewart finished in a sixth-place tie individually, while the VU men’s golf team was fifth in team standings at the NJCAA Div. III National Golf Championship which wrapped up Friday at Chautauqua Golf Club.

Stewart’s four-round total of 300 (74-78-74-74) left him 12-over-par. The Terre Haute South product was 10 strokes off the pace set by individual winner Shane Dobesh of Monroe Community College.

The Trailblazers’ final team score of 1,281 edged out sixth place Nassau Community College by one stroke. Minnesota State Technical College won the event with a total score of 1,224.

Track and field

n Pounds sixth — At Des Moines, Iowa, Indiana State junior Brandon Pounds went for the big throw on his final three attempts and fouled on each attempt but still finished sixth in the men’s hammer throw Friday at the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Finals.

Pounds earned his first All-American recognition with the effort and scored Indiana State’s first points in the men’s outdoor championship since Aubrey Herring placed second in the 110 hurdles at the 2000 NCAA Championships.

The junior went opened with a throw of 210-feet-4 (64.11 meters) and followed that up with a toss of 212-1 (64.66 meters). Pounds was third at the end of the first flight rotation and was fifth after the second flight concluded to advance to the final round.

Auto racing

n Clauson wins again — At New Egypt, N.J., Bryan Clauson was the winner in U.S. Auto Club sprint car racing Thursday at New Egypt Speedway.

Clauson was fast qualifier and led the final 16 laps to win the 30-lap feature and go 2-0 in Eastern Storm action. Jerry Coons Jr. led the first 10 turns and took second while Dave Darland led four laps and took third.

Jon Stanbrough finished ninth and held a nine-point lead over Levi Jones in the sprint point totals going into Friday’s racing.
