METRO ROUNDUP: ISU volleyball tops Chicago State to improve to 2-1

TERRE HAUTE — The Indiana State volleyball team survived a tough Chicago State squad as the Sycamores swept the Cougars 3-0 (25-21, 25-12, 31-29) in a non-conference mid-week battle Tuesday.

Senior outside hitter Morgan Dall led the Sycamore attack with 26 kills in 37 attempts (.649 hitting percentage) with two service aces, four digs and 28 points. The 26 kills is the 10th best in a single game by a Sycamore while her .649 hitting percentage ranks fourth on the ISU all-time single game list.

Sophomore middle Cassandra Willis added eight kills, two assists, three digs, and four blocks while junior middle Kyla Thomas had seven kills and four blocks. Sophomore setter Erika Nord had 37 assists in the game with senior Molly Murphy and freshman Shannon Murphy each picking up 11 digs.

ISU improved to 2-1 this season.

• Mascari MVC athlete of the week — Indiana State sophomore and Terre Haute native John Mascari has been named the MVC Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Week. The announcement came in today from the league office.

Mascari won the Evansville Mid-American Opener on Saturday, August 31 in time of 18:25.93 for 6,000 meters. Mascari used a fantastic last 1,000 meters to power home and outkick his competitors at the meet. His finished fueled a Sycamore victory over Louisville, as they defeated the Cardinals 26-29.

Mascari is no stranger to earning the Missouri Valley Honor for Athlete of the Week as he earned the honor last season with his school record performance of 23:55 for 8,000 meters at the Pre-Nationals. He was also named MVC Athlete of the Year in 2012 after winning the Missouri Valley Conference Meet.

Also receiving honorable mention honors for her efforts this weekend was Junior Nicole Lucas. Lucas placed fifth overall at the Evansville Mid-American Opener as she posted a personal best time of 15:19.48.

• DeMoss named HCAC player of the week — A game-winning goal has made sophomore Kate DeMoss the first Rose-Hulman women’s soccer player since 2010 to be named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference’s Player of the Week.

DeMoss broke a scoreless tie with her point-blank shot in the box in the 78th minute of Saturday’s game against Benedictine to give the Engineers a 1-0 victory.

DeMoss was the first honored since Molly Richardson earned two conference player of the week honors during the 2010 season.

Rose-Hulman (1-1, 0-0 HCAC) returns to play today for a 6 p.m. home matchup against visiting Marian (Ind.) at Jim Rendel Field.

• Engineers’ men ranked — Rose-Hulman’s men’s soccer team has cracked the top 10 in the Tuesday regional rankings released by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

The Engineers (1-0, 0-0) are ranked No. 8 in this week’s NCAA Division III Great Lakes Region poll after picking up a convincing 3-0 victory over Trine last week.
