METRO ROUNDUP: ISU’s Pounds qualifies for NCAA Championships

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Brandon Pounds of Indiana State missed the 2011 outdoor season with a hand injury but has made up for lost time, qualifying for the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Drake University with a fifth place finish in the men’s hammer throw at the NCAA East Preliminary Friday.

Pounds is the school record holder for the men’s hammer throw and posted the second best distance of his ISU career when he sent the hammer 213-feet (64.94 meters) on his fifth attempt.

Pounds is the third member of the throwing group at Indiana State that has advanced to compete in the NCAA Finals. Felisha Johnson and Mary Theisen both advanced in the women’s shot put as Johnson placed fifth (56-feet-2-inches) and Theisen ninth (52-feet-33⁄4-inches) in the competition Thursday.

Greggmar Swift advanced to the quarterfinals of the men’s 110 meter hurdles with a time of 13.75, the eighth fastest of the preliminary round. Sophomore Maurice Lyke was edged out of the quarterfinals by six hundredths of a second.

Stacia Weatherford came in third in the third heat of the women’s 400 meter hurdle quarterfinals to automatically qualify for the NCAA Finals with a time of 58.03. That was the eighth fastest of the 27 athletes in the quarterfinals.

Leeann Michl’s season came to a close in the quarterfinals of the women’s 800 meters as she ran 2:08.35 to finish 15th overall, 1.5 seconds away from a berth in the NCAA Finals despite being boxed in and unable to run her typical race.

Dustin Betz finished 30th in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:08.29.

Johnson returns to compete in her third event of the NCAA prelims, the women’s hammer, at 2 p.m. today. Major Clay and Jonathon Christensen compete in the men’s high jump at 5 p.m.
