METRO ROUNDUP: Rose women’s tennis in HCAC championship

INDIANAPOLIS — With a 5-0 sweep of Franklin on Saturday, the Rose-Hulman women’s tennis team is headed to today’s Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament championship.

The No. 2 seed Engineers will take on top-seeded Hanover at West Indy Racquet Club in the final round, beginning at 10 a.m.

Rose didn’t leave anything to chance in Saturday’s semifinals, as Suzana Mohd and Paige Cook earned straight-set singles wins and the teams of Cook and Marie Stettler, Mohd and Kylie McCollum; and Lauren Reberger and Sydney Short won handily in doubles play.

The Engineers return to the HCAC tournament championship for the second straight season, a year after falling to 2012 champion Franklin in the title round. Rose-Hulman won its last HCAC tournament in 2011 when the Engineers earned their only bid ever to the NCAA Division III women’s tennis tournament.

Hanover advanced to today’s final round via a 5-0 victory over Anderson in the semifinals. Anderson, the No. 5 seed, defeated 4-seed Transylvania 5-3 in Saturday’s opening round.

Singles — Marie Stettler (RH) vs. Melissa Sanders (FC) unfinished; Suzana Mohd (RH) def. Bethany Harris 6-0, 6-3.; Paige Cook (RH) def. Emily Roberts 6-4, 6-1; Colleen Stevenson (RH) vs. Chelsea Howell (FC) unfinished; Kylie McCollum (RH) vs. Shawnee Bayes (FC) unfinished; Lauren Miller (RH) vs. Becky Bonomini (FC) unfinished.

Doubles — Paige Cook-Marie Stettler (RH) def. Melissa Sanders-Bethany Harris 8-1; Suzana Mohd-Kylie McCollum (RH) def. Chelsea Howell-Alison Meyer 8-3; Lauren Reberger-Sydney Short (RH) def. Chelsea Platt-Emily Helvie 8-4.

Volleyball

n Indiana State 3, Drake 0 — At Des Moines, Iowa, Indiana State swept to its first victory at Drake since 2004 by defeating the Bulldogs in a Missouri Valley Conference contest Friday.

The triumph not only snapped an eight-match losing streak in Des Moines, it also snapped a five-match losing this season. Scores were 25-14, 25-20, 25-17.

The Sycamores (8-11 overall, 2-6 MVC) were slated to be back in action Saturday night against Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

On Friday, senior setter Loni Mackinson became the eighth member of Indiana State’s 2,000-assist club as she recorded 36 assists to give her 2,001 for her career.

Senior Morgan Dall led a balanced Sycamore attack with 13 kills, while freshman Bree Spangler had nine, junior Kyla Thomas and sophomore Cassandra Willis eight each and sophomore Victoria Swigart six. Spangler also had 11 digs for ISU.

n Rose loses twice — At Pomona, Calif., Rose-Hulman finished its trip to southern California with two tough losses Saturday, as the Engineers fell to host Pomona-Pitzer and NCAA Division III No. 3-ranked Cal Lutheran.

Rose-Hulman (11-16) dropped its first match to Pomona-Pitzer by scores of 25-13, 18-25, 20-25, 25-20, 15-7.

Senior Casey Levitt, who hails from nearby Thousand Oaks, Calif., led Rose with 14 kills, 12 digs and three service aces. Teammates Sarah Jensen and Morgan Dreyer had 11 and 10 kills respectively.

Dreyer tallied 32 assists and Jensen had 19 from the setter position, while Kate Dangel had the top mark in digs with 25.

Cal Lutheran (20-1) showed its strength in the nightcap, defeating the Engineers 25-14, 25-18, 25-23.

Jensen led the Engineers with nine kills and Levitt added eight. Dreyer had 15 assists and Jensen added 11, while Dangel recorded nine digs.

Rose-Hulman returns to play Wednesday when the Engineers travel to Earlham for a 7:30 p.m. Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference match.

Rifle

n Rose wins pair – At Boston, Rose-Hulman defeated Massachusetts of Technology and John Jay College in the Engineers’ second match at MIT on Saturday.

Rose fired a team score of 4,433 points to earn top honors over both MIT (4,341) and John Jay (4,238).

Senior Adam Foss led the Engineers with a score of 1,123 points on Day 2, improving his smallbore score from Friday’s match by nine points. Close behind him were senior teammates Evan Duvall and Suzanne Eisenberger, who each fired a 1,108. Duvall’s 560 in smallbore led the Engineers, while Foss topped the air-rifle scores at 565.

Junior Allie Carlson finished in fourth for the Engineers, shooting a 1,094. Carlson improved her air-rifle score from Friday’s match by 16 points.

Rose-Hulman returns to action Nov. 2 when it hosts Tennessee-Martin at the Engineer Rifle Range.
