METRO ROUNDUP: Rose-Hulman baseball sweeps Mount St. Joseph

TERRE HAUTE — Rose-Hulman completed a three-game Heartland Collegiate Athletic conference baseball series sweep over Mount St. Joseph with a 9-6 victory on Saturday at Art Nehf Field.

Matthew Turk led the offense effort with three hits, including two doubles, two runs scored and two RBIs. Donald Stopka added a single, three RBIs and scored once.

Other key offensive contributors included Jamie Weinle  with two singles and two RBIs; Nick Pilipovich with two singles, one RBI and one run; and senior Will Burchett with two runs scored.

That  offensive effort helped Ben Menich improve to 2-0 on the season on the mound. Menich tossed seven innings and allowed just one earned run on five hits with five strikeouts. Matt Green tossed the final 1 1/3 innings of hitless relief with one strikeout to earn his first save.

Rose-Hulman (17-7, 8-2) return to action with a trip to league leader Anderson on Tuesday.

Track

• Rose earns five firsts — At Greencastle, Rose-Hulman earned five event victories and 19 top-five finishes at the DePauw University Track and Field Invitational on Saturday.

Liz Evans led the individual performances with three event wins, including one school record. Evans recorded a school record long jump mark of 18-6 1/2 that currently ranks in the top 10 nationally. She also won the high jump with a mark of 5-7 and the triple jump with a distance of 35-8 1/2.

Sutton Coleman and Trey Cahill earned event victories for the men's squad.  Coleman won the 400-meter dash in a time of 48.44 seconds, with Cahill claiming the hammer throw with a career-best toss of 167-2.

Rose placed second of nine teams in the men's scoring and finished seventh on the women's side. The Engineers return to action at the Indiana Division III Championships at Franklin on Saturday.

Golf

• ISU in third place — At Peoria, Ill., Indiana State freshman Amanda Smith led the Sycamores to a third-place finish at the Hotels at Grand Prairie Invitational Saturday, finishing alone in sixth place with a 231 total after carding her third straight round under 80 with a 78 in Saturday’s final round.

Smith opened the tournament with a 78 Friday morning and shot a 75 in the afternoon round to enter the third round tied for fifth.

The Sycamores finished third in the 10-team tournament with a 946 total. Indiana State shot 318 in Friday’s morning round, came back with a 306 in the afternoon session, and then totaled 322 in Saturday’s final round.

Christina Beyerl and sophomore McCall Christopher tied for 13th with 238. Emily Dixon posted an 80 in Saturday’s final round to tie for 20th with 241.

This was the final tournament of the regular season for ISU before hosting the 2012 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Women’s Golf Championship at the Country Club of Terre Haute Sunday from April 22-24.

Tennis

• Rose 5-0 this week — Rose-Hulman finished a 5-0 week on the men's court with an 8-1 victory over Defiance on Saturday.

Ben Paras and Devon Fritz led the effort with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, then teamed up for a No. 1 doubles win. Freshman Ray Montgomery, a Terre Haute South graduate, rounded out the effort with a No. 6 singles victory.
