METRO ROUNDUP: Rose-Hulman baseball advances in HCAC Tournament

TERRE HAUTE — Rose-Hulman sophomore Andrew Stull tossed seven shutout innings and the Engineers blasted two solo home runs in a 5-0 win over Anderson University in the opening round of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament at Manchester University.

Stull scattered six hits over eight shutout innings to help the Engineers (24-16) advance into the winner’s bracket matchup against Manchester today at 9:30 a.m. He walked two and struck out six in a matchup with Anderson ace Nolan Schaefer, as the Ravens starter fell to 7-1 on the season.

Senior Hank Akard and sophomore Donnie Waters blasted solo home runs in the seventh inning to propel the offensive effort.

• Allee named first-team All-MVC — Senior Morgan Allee has earned first team All-Missouri Valley Conference honors while junior Megan Stone and freshman Erika Crissman were both named second team All-MVC, the league office announced Wednesday.

The honor marks the first for the senior Allee who as named second team last season as well as MVC Newcomer of the Year, one year ago. It is also the first year-end honors for Stone and Crissman, as well as the first time in ISU history that three players have earned post season honors in the same season.

Allee, who was the All-MVC selection at short stop, led the team with a .381 batting average and an ISU single season record .497 on base percentage to lead the Sycamores in her senior season. The senior also finished the season with 31 stolen bases to rank 21st in NCAA after finishing 9th last season.

• Rose-Hulman players honored — Rose-Hulman landed five players on the 2014 All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference team, as voted by the league’s nine head coaches this week.

Four — senior catcher Allison Bowman, junior shortstop Carly Heibel, sophomore second baseman Marissa Stout and junior center fielder Jessica Ahlborn — were named to the all-HCAC second team for their efforts, while senior third baseman Jenna Martinek was named as an honorable mention.
