METRO ROUNDUP: Wayne Newton Post 346 picks up victory Saturday

TERRE HAUTE — Visiting Wayne Newton Post 346 led literally the entire game in American Legion baseball Saturday, defeating Remington by a score of 16-3.

Jacob Johnson hit the first pitch of the game for a home run, his first of the season, and later added a double and two more runs batted in, while Zach Milam had four hits and five RBIs to help lead a 19-hit attack in just five innings.

The second game of Saturday’s scheduled doubleheader was called off because of rain.

Highlights — For Wayne Newton Post 346, Zach Milam was 4 for 5 with a double and 5 RBIs; Cody Brock 3 for 4 with a double; Preston Tofaute 2 for 3 with an RBI; and Jacob Johnson 2 for 4 with a homer, a double and 3 RBIs.

Next — Wayne Newton Post 346, which lost 8-7 at Clinton on Wednesday, is now 10-3 and will host Logansport for a doubleheader at 1 p.m. today at Terre Haute North’s Don Jennings Field.


• Junior results — At the Duane Klueh Tennis Complex, 9-year-old Elizabeth Tindera won girls 12 singles and Rockville fifth-grader Canaan Sellers won boys championships in three different age groups at the ThyssenKrupp Presta Terre Haute Open played Friday and Saturday.

• Pole-vaulters fare well — At Crawfordsville, Rachel Gutish of Terre Haute won the 17-18 girls division of the pole vault by clearing 10 feet, 6 inches in the USATF Indiana Association Championships on Saturday.

Other members of the Wabash Valley Pole Vault Club who competed Saturday:

• Hannah Zadeii, 7-0, third, 17-18 girls division.

•  Tyler Nemeth, 11-0, tied for fourth, 17-18 boys division.

• Cameron Diekhoff, 11-0, tied for fourth, 17-18 boys division.

All four will advance to the Region 7 Championships on July 13-14 at Kankakee, Ill.
