Colts have no plan to move from Anderson

INDIANAPOLIS — Apparently the Indianapolis Colts and Anderson University officials found a way to work out a few last-minute snags concerning the team’s summer training camp site.

The Colts announced on their team web site Monday afternoon that players are expected to report to the Anderson University campus on Saturday, July 28, and will have their first official practices on July 29. A full training camp practice schedule is expected to be announced soon.

Anderson has been the Colts’ training camp site for the last two years and the team, along with school and Anderson city officials, had agreed to a series of five one-year contracts after last year’s camp. But the firings of three vice chairman Bill Polian, vice president/general manager Chris Polian and coach Jim Caldwell after the 2011 season put things in a temporary holding pattern.

New Colts general manager Ryan Grigson and first-year coach Chuck Pagano wanted to take a close look at Anderson University and its facilities before making a final decision. It seems as if they came away liking what they saw.

“It’s definitely a viable setup for us. It’s close by proximity. [The team has] been there before and we know what to expect. Really, it was very important to what Chuck thought as well because he organizes the practices. He’s more involved than I am, actually. He’s the one who has to have the guys out there and know how much field and room he needs. He had a lot of questions that I wouldn’t have even thought of,” Grigson said when asked about Anderson and possible training camp issues during an April 18 press conference.

“All the things logistically that you never even think of. How will the guys get from point A to point B when they have a meeting at this time? If it takes 25 minutes to walk you have 10 minutes for travel time and then you have shuttles. It’s kind of a compounding thing once you kind of get it all together. But [the Anderson people] have been great and are working with us to try and get something done. I feel real good about it.”

Indianapolis originally spent training camp at Anderson from its inaugural season in 1984 to 1998. Following 11 years at Rose-Hulman, the Colts returned to Anderson in 2010.
