METRO ROUNDUP: Experienced ISU track quintet heads to NCAA Outdoor Championships

TERRE HAUTE — Five Indiana State track and field athletes are preparing for the NCAA Outdoor Championships that begin Wednesday at Drake University.

Felisha Johnson, Mary Theisen and Stacia Weatherford represent the women’s team, while Brandon Pounds and Greggmar Swift will compete for the ISU men.

Johnson is in her second national finals, and in two events for the second time. After placing 18th in shot put and fouling on all her hammer throws last year, she competes this season in shot put and discus.

Theisen, a transfer from Winona State, was the 2011 Division II discus champion after placing eighth in the same event in 2010. She’ll compete in shot put this week but narrowly missed qualifying in discus.

Weatherford is competing in her first finals after qualifying in the 400-meter hurdles. She was seventh in that event and 16th in the 110-meter hurdles in the 2010 junior national championships.

Swift, a 2011 World University Games competitor for Barbados, has qualified in the men’s 110-meter high hurdles; he placed ninth in that event in the World University Games.

Pounds will compete in men’s hammer throw. He was 19th in the nation in shot put in 2010 before missing the 2011 season with an injury.

Women’s discus begins at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, with women’s 400-meter hurdles at 9:30 p.m. that day. The 110-meter men’s high hurdles semifinals are 7:50 p.m. Thursday, while men’s hammer and women’s shot put are Friday at 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. respectively.

The meet will be streamed live, with Wednesday events on NCAA.com and events Thursday through Saturday on ESPN3.com. ESPNU will also televise Saturday’s events live beginning at 1 p.m.

Baseball

• Burnam selected — At Eugene, Ore., Kyle Burnam of Indiana State was selected to the all-regional team after the Sycamores’ performances Friday and Saturday.

Burnam batted .400 in two games, going 2 for 5 with a double, two runs, two walks and a stolen base as the Sycamores lost to Cal State Fullerton and Austin Peay. The four-year starter from Marshall finished his ISU career with 215 games, 203 starts, 241 hits, 38 doubles, 157 runs, 121 RBIs, 120 walks and a .309 batting average. His walk total is fourth-best in ISU history.

He is the 15th ISU baseball player to earn all-regional honors.
