Royers post low score at Firecracker Open

TERRE HAUTE — Rusty and Jon Royer had the low score in the Firecracker Open played Thursday at Hulman Links.

The Royers carded an 8—under—par 64 to win the parent—child division in the Terrre Haute Golf Association two—man event comprised of three six—round segments.

The winners had nine birdies and one bogey in their round.

Tom and Andy Jones had the second low score with 65 to finish second in the same division. Five teams had 71 to tie for third.

Chris Keen and Josh Miley took first place in the open division with 66. They had eight birdies in their round to edge Ezra Evans and Matt Davis with 67.

Two teams had 68 to tie for third: Chuck Adamson and Steve Anderson and Mike Lacey and Ernie Maesch.

Ted Kaperak and Jim Homburg finished with 68 to win the senior division.  The twosomes of Chuck Payne and Ted Collins and John Kusch and Bert Robinson each had 71 for second.

Glen Jones had a hole—in—one in the competition played in cloudy conditions. He used an 8—iron to get his first ace on No. 16.

Fifty—seven teams were in the event sponsored by Plumbers and Steamfitters Local 157.

One of the players said the greens at the course were in "excellent shape" for the competition.

Next up on the golf schedule is the city junior tournament to be played Tuesday through Thursday at Rea Park.

The men’s city tourney, sponsored by Show—Me's, begins July 13.

• Winners shoot 55 at Country Club — At the Country Club of Terre Haute, the winners shot a 16—under—par 55 to win the Fourth of July tournament.

Steve Price, Bill Grimes, Dan Callahan and Tom Cummins had the low score in the two best ball of four event.

Gary Hosking had a hole—in—one on No. 16 in the event. He was in the foursome that took second place.

• North AAU team competes at Disney — At Orlando, Fla., Terre Haute North’s AAU wrestling team had five All—Americans and 10 medalists as it took part in the Disney Duals which finished on Tuesday.

Nick Byrd of Sullivan was the team’s outstanding wrestler as he went undefeated and earned a gold medal.

The North team won its first six matches in pool play. It was defeated by a Missouri-based team in pool play and finished tied for first in its pool.

North narrowly lost to Florida-based Polk County Goons 33-30 in a championship semifinal. North fell in a consolation match 33-30 to the Ohio Titans.

The team is made up of nine wrestlers from North and seven from other schools in Indiana. The team is coached by Luke Register with John DeLisle and Mark Frisz of North’s coaching staff as assistant coaches
