Metro Roundup: Rose-Hulman football to renew rivalry with DePauw

TERRE HAUTE — The 2010 Rose-Hulman football schedule released Monday features rivalry games to start and end the season for the first time since 1947.

Rose-Hulman renews its rivalry with DePauw for the first time since 2005 with a trip to Greencastle on Sept. 11. The season-opening matchup kicks off at 1 p.m. and will represent the 54th meeting between the two schools.

The Engineers will close the season with the Battle of the Borders Game against Earlham at Cook Stadium at 1:30 p.m. Nov. 13. Rose-Hulman leads the all-time series 40-38 and the Borders series 9-0.

The matchup moves from the opener to the final game of the year due to Earlham’s move to the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference that begins in 2010. The last time Rose-Hulman opened and closed the season with rivalry games occurred in 1947 with matchups against Earlham and Hanover.

Rose-Hulman also hosts Kalamazoo in non-conference play on Sept. 18 at 1 p.m. The Engineers and Hornets will battle for the first time since 2001.

The HCAC schedule opens with a trip to Hanover on Sept. 25, followed by the homecoming game against Manchester on Oct. 2. The Engineers will then travel to perennial league powers Franklin and Mount St. Joseph in consecutive weeks on Oct. 9 and 16.

The schedule features three of the final four games at home, with Bluffton (Oct. 23), Anderson (Nov. 6) and Earlham coming to Terre Haute for 1:30 p.m. games. The remaining HCAC contest features a trip to Defiance on Oct. 30.

Rose-Hulman finished 6-4 overall and 4-3 in league play last season with an offensive unit that set single-season records for points scored, total offense and passing offense under the tutelage of head coach Steve Englehart. The 2010 roster will likely consist of more than 100 players, including eight defensive starters, seven offensive starters and both specialists from the 2009 squad.
