METRO: ISU softball team to start fall schedule on Sunday

TERRE HAUTE — The Indiana State softball team is set to open the fall portion of its schedule Sunday against Heartland Community College in a doubleheader at Price Field.

Sunday’s doubleheader marks the first of eight September games for the Sycamores before opening their 2013-14 regular season in February.

First pitch for Sunday’s games is set for 2 p.m. at Price Field. The Sycamores will return to action Sept. 22 when they host Lakeland College in a doubleheader.

The team will wrap up its fall schedule Sept. 29 with a home doubleheader against Indiana University.

n Niehaus Lumber outing — At Idle Creek, the foursome of Doug Wood, Brian Coffman, Steve Heck and Bill Rayborn won the gross division of the Niehaus Lumber outing Thursday.

Volleyball

n Murray State 3, Indiana State 1 — At Dayton, Ohio, Friday the 13th did not prove to be kind to Indiana State as the Sycamores were defeated by Murray State 25-15, 21-25, 25-21, 25-21 in the opening match of the Wright State Invitational, despite a career-high performance by junior middle-blocker Kyla Thomas.

ISU (4-4) will regroup and play two matches today in the Wright State Tournament. The Sycamores will go up against Robert Morris at 10 a.m., then take on host Wright State at 5:30 p.m. as they wrap up their pre-conference schedule.
