METRO ROUNDUP: Wayne Newton 2-1 on young season

TERRE HAUTE — Wayne Newton Post 346 improved to 2-1 in American Legion baseball with a late 8-3 victory over Effingham on Thursday night.

Craig Peters was winning pitcher for Post 346 and T.J. Decker and Cody Thornton led a 16-hit attack with three hits each.

Post 346 played a doubleheader late Saturday night at Mattoon, Ill., but the final score was not available at the Tribune-Star’s news deadline. Today’s previously scheduled doubleheader against Kokomo has been called off because Western High School still had players in the Indiana high school state tournament.

Next — Wayne Newton Post 346 (2-1) played a late doubleheader Saturday at Mattoon, Ill. Today’s previously scheduled games with Kokomo will not be played, so next action for Post 346 is the opening game of the Terre Haute Invitational at 3:30 p.m. Thursday against Lafayette.


• Youths compete — Several young Wabash Valley golfers were involved in a pair of Indiana Golf Foundation events earlier this week.

At the Country Club of Old Vincennes, Keegan Roembke of Brazil and Eamon Eccles of Jasonville led the way by finishing fourth and fifth, scoring 83 and 84 respectively, in boys 17-19 play on Friday.

Also playing at Vincennes were Kristi Thomas of Montezuma, fifth in girls 17-19 with a 96; Lex Anderson of Terre Haute, seventh in boys 15-16 with a 106; Ali Danielson and Alexandria Maris, both of Terre Haute, eighth and 12th with scores of 98 and 121 in girls 15-16 play; and Clayton Buck of Brazil, 11th in boys 13-14 competition with a 115.

On Thursday, Caleb Maris of Terre Haute tied for 17th in boys 10-11 play at the Dye Course near Franklin. He shot an 87.

Auto racing

• Short posts win — At Bloomington, Brady Short was a winner in racing at Bloomington Speedway on Friday.

Short won the feature for sprint cars. Other winners were Derek Groomer in UMP modifieds and Winston Howe in super stocks.

Indiana Midget Week action is slated this week at the track.
