From Terre Haute to the Major Leagues: Barmes helping Rockies win offensively and defensively

Thanks to his defensive versatility, Clint Barmes continues to be a key member of the Colorado Rockies this season in their quest for a National League playoff spot.

Barmes, the regular starting second baseman, filled in at shortstop for three games last week. Regular shortstop Troy Tulowitzki returned to the lineup on Friday after missing three games with back spasms. He injured his back swinging while hitting a game-tying single in the seventh inning Sept. 7 and left that game.

In eight games last eight days, the former Indiana State infielder was 7 for 27 with a double and two RBI’s. More notably, all eight of those games were victories for the Rockies. Heading into Saturday’s late game at San Diego, the Rockies were 82-60 to extend its National League wildcard lead to 51/2 games. With 20 games remaining in the regular season, the Rockies have also pulled to within two games of the NL West-leading Los Angeles Dodgers.
