METRO ROUNDUP: Rose baseball opens weekend with HCAC win

TERRE HAUTE — Rose-Hulman opened Friday night's Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader against Hanover with a 6-1 victory.

Game two was to be a nine-inning contest that concluded after the Tribune-Star’s news deadline.

In the opener, Jim Bob Schuler tossed a complete-game seven-hitter with no earned runs allowed and three strikeouts to move to 5-2 on the season.

Offensively, Rose scored four runs in the second inning to earn the victory.  Hank Akard, Jamie Weinle and Parker Fulkerson had two hits each to lead the Engineers.  Akard had one RBI, Weinle blasted a double with one RBI, and Fulkerson had a double, one run and one RBI.

Will Burchett added a triple and scored two runs to provide support.

Rose-Hulman (18-8, 9-3 HCAC) and Hanover will complete their series with a single game at 6 p.m. today.


• Outing — At Country Club of Terre Haute, the foursome of Steve Danielson, Doug Grim, Scooter Grim and Dan Gmelich won the gross division of the inaugural Bridges of Indiana and The Hearing Care Center Golf Outing to Benefit Autism on Friday.

• New No. 1 — Evansville Harrison is No. 1 in the second boys high school poll of the season.

Defending state champ Brebeuf is second after being first in the preseason rankings.

Harrison is joined by Evansville Memorial and Jasper from the Washington Regional in the top 20. Terre Haute South is honorable mention.

Carmel is 10th, the only team from the Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference in the top 20.
