Girls Prep Basketball Roundup: North gets off to hot start, falls at Carmel in MIC action

Carmel —
Visiting Terre Haute North, playing without injured point guard Kelly Meggs, jumped out to a first-quarter lead against third-ranked Carmel in Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference girls basketball Saturday but eventually lost 67-37.
Francesca McCarthy led the Patriots with 15 points and Danielle Ketner scored nine, but after taking an 18-16 lead at the first stop the visitors were held to 19 points the rest of the way.
“We came out and shot the ball well,” coach Mike Allen said. “We might have surprised them a little … but they picked up their defense at the start of the second quarter.”
Krissy Steffin had 23 points to lead the Greyhounds.

Greencastle wins county title — At Putnamville, Greencastle ran its record to 4-0 and captured the Putnam County Tournament with a 52-40 victory over host South Putnam on Saturday night.

In the third-place game, North Putnam shook off a scoreless first quarter to defeat Cloverdale.
